Why You Have a Wardrobe Full of Clothes but Nothing to Wear (and how to fix it)

Picture the scene: it's 7.30am, you're standing with a cup of tea in hand, there's a teenager yelling that he can't find any school socks. You're staring into your open wardrobe, there's a sea of lovely clothes, some of which you love, but no actual outfits.

The frustrating conclusion is always the same - you have a wardrobe full of clothes but nothing to wear.

There's a reason this happens to so many of us and it's easier to fix than you might think.

Wardrobe full of clothes but nothing to wear
There's a reason getting dressed feels impossible and it's not a lack of clothes

For those of us for whom mid life and lockdown seemed to collide in a mixture of working from home, weight gain and jogging bottoms, there's a simple reason why your wardrobe no longer appears to be on your side. Life has altered but your style hasn't caught up and your clothes no longer fit your lifestyle.

The good news is there is now more help for women over 40 than ever before. In need of a complete wardrobe overhaul, colour analysis or advice on how to put outfits together? A personal stylist in your area is but a google search away. Feel embarrassed about how full your wardrobe is? You shouldn't be, it's catnip to a stylist. Don't even think about doing a pre-edit edit before your stylist arrives, you're just ruining her fun and I guarantee she won't bat an eyelid.

So, how does a personal stylist solve the 'nothing to wear' problem? It boils down to the three C's - Cut, Colour and Core pieces.

1. Colour analysis is often a useful jumping off point as it narrows down your choice and focuses the mind. If you're looking to cull some of your unwanted pieces, then those items that don't work really hard for you either because the colour doesn't suit or the fit isn't comfortable, are probably the first to go.

2. Cut is everything as we get older, if for only one reason - comfort. We all know how priceless a beautifully cut pair of trousers is, but a beautifully cut pair of trousers that are comfortable too? Well, that's the holy grail. It's frowned upon to use the 'F' word these days, but who doesn't want their clothes to be flattering if it means you look and feel your best?

3. Core pieces form the foundations of your wardrobe and a personal stylist will help you identify what these are. From there she'll curate effortless outfits from the clothes you already own, taking into account your best colours and of course your day to day lifestyle. You'll be left with combinations you would never have considered yourself and a strategy of what to shop for going forward.

When these three elements align, getting dressed will be so much easier, it should even be enjoyable! If you've ever wasted time standing in front of your wardrobe feeling overwhelmed, a personal styling session could transform the way you see the clothes you own.
