What to Wear On Your Feet This Summer

Summer dressing is trickier than winter dressing in this country, but the question of what to wear on your feet is more complicated than ever thanks to the plethora of skirt lengths, trouser shapes and well, the white trainers' recent bad press.

Personally, I love a white trainer and I'm not going to let Rishi Sunak or anyone else for that matter, stop me wearing them. It does, however, feel a bit like we might have reached peak floral midi dress with white trainers as a look, so if you're looking for something a bit different this summer, I suggest keeping this very reliable and effortless outfit as a staple on the back burner while you update your wardrobe with one or two fresh new footwear options.

So with that in mind, just what alternatives are there for your feet this summer? Here are a few ideas...

1. The colourful trainer

If you want to stick with a trainer then consider a splash of colour instead. Bright pink, red, green or yellow are juicy options that'll work well with prints (even if they clash, possibly even better if they do) and of course you can rely on a trainer to see you through a day spent on your feet.

2. The loafer

A big trend through winter 2025, loafers continue to be a go-to work shoe for those in the know. Banish any thoughts of city boys in the '90s and instead try a chunky style in a colour other than black - there are plenty of animal print versions out there that'll look fab with white trousers or skirts and they'll stand you in good stead if you have to run for a train or bus.

3. The woven Mary-Jane

I love this summer's iteration of the classic Mary-Jane flat. It's a more grown up version of the jelly shoe some of us wore in the '80s, and while you won't be wearing them in the sea, you will still get the benefit of the air circulating around your foot on a sweltering day, should we be lucky enough to have any. Oh and this style will honestly look great with jeans, skirts, dresses, shorts, you name it.

4. The ballet pump

I appreciate that these are not for everyone, and a little skimpy on the foot support, but I really believe every wardrobe should have at least one pair of ballet flats because they're the ultimate throw-on summer shoe and utterly timeless and ageless. If you find them just too, well, flat, then this season there are heeled versions you might prefer that offer more than a nod to Chanel. I love a ballet flat with a cropped trouser, Capri pant or denim cut-off, it's the Kate Moss effect, it's hard to disassociate them.

And the best thing about all of these styles? They cover your toes! So if you haven't yet prepared your feet for exposure, you can buy yourself a little more time before sandal season is upon us.
