How To Wear Skirts

"I never wear skirts... I don't know how to style them".
Another of the comments I hear from my clients, especially in the summer months.
This year, I'm all over skirts; I'm struggling to find dresses that fit me perfectly on both the top and the bottom which is a problem that a separate skirt and top potentially fixes. Enter the co-ord.
I think perhaps we've become so used to throwing on a dress or a jumpsuit (getting dressed doesn't get much easier than that) in warm weather, that the idea of having to mix, match, french tuck and/or belt, feels like a big ask. But with co-ordinate sets, half the work is done for you because a 'co-ord' is basically a dress or jumpsuit cut into two with the added bonus that you can usually buy them in different sizes if needed.
If you haven't invested in any co-ordinates yet, now is the time. Fashion editors' high street go-to Cos has loose fitting linen skirt and shirt sets while its younger sister H&M offers cutesy white cotton broderie trim co-ords just perfect for your holiday. If you need a dressier evening look, there's plenty to tick that box too; try Mint Velvet, Anthropologie and Me & Em.
What makes co-ords so useful is that they can be worn with other things. Team with those wardrobe staples - the top with jeans or shorts for example and the bottom piece with a simple tee or vest top. This versatility makes them ideal for optimising suitcase space and who doesn't love a linen shirt that doubles up as a beach coverup?
So that's your boil in the bag skirt and top formula but what should you wear with that beautiful skirt already hanging in your wardrobe? Don't overthink it. Approach a skirt as you would your jeans; if the skirt is voluminous, tiered or involves a print fabric go for a simple well fitting basic such as a fresh white t-shirt or camisole top. If your skirt is more tailored or shorter in length then try a pretty silk blouse or a fun graphic or logo t-shirt for a daytime look. Complete the outfit with wedges, ballet pumps or strappy flats, all three styles are comfortable and holiday-friendly and will work with just about anything.
